258 Falklands Commemorative 12 Year Old

Truly a labour of love, this limited release of a commemorative bottle of single malt Scotch whisky pays tribute to the British servicemen and women, as well as the three Falkland Islanders, that lost their lives in the Falkland War in 1982 over 40 years ago.

The bottle was conceived by two former Royal Marines and a university lecturer who have close personal ties to the Falkland War. One of the former Marines served as a Troop Commander in the Falklands Campaign during his military career before retiring as a Brigadier. The other served as a Royal Marine for 23 years whilst on secondment within the Ministry of Defence. Created by veterans, for veterans. As such, The 258 Commemorative Whisky is a passion project to the highest degree.

The Bottles

Conceived by three friends and Scotch whisky lovers, two of whom are Royal Marines (and one of whom fought in the Falklands) made this commemorative bottling a reality in the hopes that Scotch whisky drinkers would pour out a dram and raise a toast to those who lost their lives.

A limited run of 258 bottles, one to honour each of the souls that lost their lives, are available for sale. As a gesture of charity, and in tribute to those who did not return, bottles number 19 and 82 will be given to the South Atlantic Medal Association, as will a share of all profits.

The label depicts the lower portion of East Falkland, as well as notable settlements such as Darwin, Goose Green, and San Carlos. The bold ‘258’ is reminiscent of the font used on service aircraft and warships. The typography is also based on letters and documents sent during the war. The creators of the bottle were, in particular, fascinated by the instrument of surrender document which contained a mixture of type-written and handwritten lettering.

The Falklands War

The Falklands War was an undeclared conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina between 2nd April 1982 - 14th June 1982. The dispute began when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia in quick succession, two territories that had been under Crown dependency for almost 150 years.

Falkland Island residents, many of which were descendants of British settlers, felt strongly that the territories should remain in the hands of the British and that the attack on the islands was an attack on British sovereignty.

The British Military response was named Operation Corporate and involved large numbers of servicemen and women, including almost the entire Royal Navy. During the ten-week campaign, 237 members of the UK Armed Forces, 4 members of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, 6 Merchant Navy members, 8 sailors from Hong Kong, and 3 Falkland Island residents lost their lives. This bottle is for them.

The three men who created this unique and truly memorable bottle have worked towards this release for over 12 months. They hope that those who purchase a bottle will open, enjoy, and remember those who lost their lives.
